While most local suppliers assemble frames they order from "big bee" and market them as local, we actually make our own frames. Why does that matter? Well for one, it is a truly local product. But more importantly, it allows us to do things like change the side bar material from Eastern White Pine to Spruce. Why? Without getting too technical, Eastern White Pine has a specific gravity of about 0.36 and an end grain to side grain strength ratio of about 56%, while Spruce has a specific gravity of about 0.42 and an end grain to side grain ratio of about 72%.

What does that mean for you? To Put it simply a Spruce side bar has significantly more withdrawal strength than an Eastern White Pine sidebar, meaning less top bars coming off the frame when working your hive.

Additionally, as with all parts of a beehive, frames need to be assembled for withdrawal strength, while keeping in mind preservation of the slender pieces of wood. That's why we use glue coated staples for the job. Glued staples not only have superior pull apart strength than nails, they also leave more of the wood intact, leading to less broken ears.
